Welcome to NELA-NJ, the New Jersey state
affiliate of the National Employment Lawyers
Association. NELA-NJ is a statewide organization of
attorneys who solely or primarily represent individuals in
employment-related
matters who are committed to protecting and
expanding the legal rights and opportunities of working women
and men through litigation, education and advocacy. The
National Employment Lawyers Association was founded in 1985 by
Paul Tobias to provide assistance and support to lawyers in
protecting the rights of employees against the greater
resources of their employers and the defense bar. NELA
is the country's only professional organization that is
exclusively comprised of lawyers who represent individual
employees in cases involving employment discrimination,
wrongful termination, employee benefits and other
employment-related matters. NELA has a membership of
more than 3,500 lawyers in the United States and abroad, as
well as more than sixty state and local
affiliates around the country. As a group, NELA members
have represented hundreds of thousands of individuals in
disputes against their employers. NELA members are the
lawyers who bring actions to ensure equal employment
opportunity for all, and to vindicate the rights of
individuals to fairness and justice in the workplace. Our state
chapter was founded over a decade ago by Peter Van Schaick.
Through his tireless efforts, the NELA-NJ chapter successfully
campaigned for the 1990 amendments to New Jersey's Law Against
Discrimination, guaranteeing a jury trial and all tort
remedies such as punitive damages; as well as expansion of the
Rule of Professional Conduct 4.2 permitting ex parte contact
with corporate employees. NELA
advances and encourages the professional development of its
members through networking, educational programs, publications
and technical support. The Chapter holds regular monthly
meetings for networking and the exchange of information.
Through the publication of our monthly newsletter, the
Network, our members keep abreast of the latest developments
in employment law. NELA promotes the workplace
rights of individual employees through legislative public
policy initiatives
and the submission of amicus curiae briefs to the Appellate and
Supreme Courts. Volunteer attorneys devote an
extraordinary amount of time to preparing newsletters,
multiple-day educational seminars and amicus briefs on
critical employment law issues. By sharing resources,
the plaintiff's employment bar in New Jersey has made a
significant impact on the decisions which are rendered by New
Jersey state and federal judges and has assured that their
decisions will more likely be based upon briefs and arguments
from plaintiff's attorneys who are the best prepared to
represent the interests of all New Jersey workers. Whether
you are a plaintiff's attorney or employee, we invite you to
become familiar with the resources this site
provides.
